Unlike some short trips to crowded national parks, the Taste of Mongolia Winter Group Tour covers a vast territory, various landscapes, and rich outdoor activities. To name a few, you will explore the nomadic life and enjoy authentic local food while saying with nomads, ride horses and camels, witness the semi-desert area, climb an extinct volcano,

play and walk on frozen rivers and lakes, see the wild horses and other wild creatures in their habitat, visit heatless ancient monastery Erdenezuu, remote towns and villages.

 

Day 1: Travel to Kharkhorin in the Orkhon Valley

Your guide and driver pick you up at the downtown hotels. The journey starts heading modern town Kharkhorin, formerly known as the Karakorum, which once was the capital of Genghis Khaan’s Great Mongol Empire in the 13th century. After the move of the Mongolian capital to Beijing, and the fall of the Empire, Karakorum was abandoned and destroyed by Min soldiers in 1388. Today, awe-inspiring ancient monastery Erdenezuu coexists with Kharkhorin town in the broad valley of the Orkhon River. Arrive at Kharkhorin late afternoon, visit and see some valuable religious items in the Erdenezuu Monastery Museum and view its stunning architecture. This over 400 years old, stunning architectural monastery is one of the few monasteries that remained from Mongolian 700 monasteries after the communist purge.

Day 2-3: Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan National Park, nomad experience

Be ready for real Mongolian experiences. The adventure continues to Khorgo Terkhiin Tsagaan National Park known as “The Legendary Khorgo Area” by locals. The landscapes change into more mountainous. On the way, see a deer stone date back to The Bronze Age, break for a short at the lava canyon of the frozen River Chuluut, and have lunch in a local area. Visit a nomadic family in the national park. You will spend the rest of the day and the next day in the same area staying with the same nomad family. Following day, explore the beautiful national park. Walk and play a traditional game on frozen Lake Terkhiin Tsagaan, explore caves and climb the Khorgo volcano, which looks like a black bowl on a snow-white sheet.

Day 4: Tsetserleg, a central town of Arkhangai province

Another day of eye-fascinating driving to Tsetserleg town. Afternoon sightseeing of Tseserleg town of Arkhangai province. Visit the local market and climb a hill marked by a tall Buddha statue, allows us see the panoramic view of the town and surrounding area.

Day 5: Elsentasarkhai semi-desert, more nomad experience

Travel spectacular Elsentasarkhai – formation of sand dunes, rugged mountains, hilly steppes, and steppes. Winter picture of Elsentasarkhai is a combination of rugged mountains, snow-covered steppes, and snowless sand dunes where you will climb. Visit another nomad family for more local experience; ride horses and camels. In the evening, enjoy the famous Mongolian dish barbecue.

Day 6: See wild horses in Hustai National Park and return to Ulaanbaatar

It is the last day to drive through and stay in the beautiful countryside, breathe winter cool and fresh air. On the way to Ulaanbaatar, visit Hustai National Park to see the last survival of the earth’s wild horses roaming free in the wild. Besides, you will see some other wild creatures.

The tour ends when the guide and driver drop you off at your accommodation.

Is the Taste of Mongolia Winter Group Tour suitable for you?

On the Taste of Mongolia Winter Group Tour, you will travel approximately 1350 km driving overland both on the paved and rough roads. The daily driving duration is 4.5-6.5 hours. The tour does not include demanding physical activities. Although, includes some outdoor experiences such as an extinct volcano climb, Buddha hill climb, a visit to a cold monastery, short horse, and camel riding supported by a local equestrian. You could decide the horse and camel riding length and pace.

Accommodation

On the Taste of Mongolia Winter Group Tour, you will stay in a basic countryside hotel for 2 nights, where you could use western friendly bathrooms.

And 3 days stay at extra gers of the nomads where western friendly WC, shower and running hot water is not available. You will spend the 2 days the same as how nomads do. The toilet will be an outhouse. The gers will be heated by stove fire, which the hosts do regularly day and night.

Private rooms are available during the 2 days local hotel stays at some additional payment, but not available when staying with the nomads.

What meals will I eat during the Taste of Mongolia Winter Group Tour?

The tour includes 5 breakfasts, 6 lunches, and 5 dinners. All meals will be authentic Mongolian and local. Meat is the main ingredient of the meal, plus some vegetables, rice, pasta, etc.

Are you a vegetarian or have a dietary restriction? If you are a vegetarian or have dietary restrictions, please inform us in advance. We will arrange the meals accordingly.

Water; We provide bottled water daily.

Guides

An English speaking guide will serve the group. They are all friendly, helpful and most of them were born and raised in the Mongolian countryside. Therefore, they have good knowledge about every aspect of Mongolia. During the camel riding, a local guide will support you.

Transportation

Full-time Japanese van Toyota Hiace is the main vehicles serve for the group tour. Depending on the group size, roads and weather condition, the vehicle type differentiates.

 

Mongolian weather in winter

The cold months of winter last between 10 November and 1 March. The harshest, although with more winter scene months are December, January, and the first half of February, while November and the last half of February are a bit milder. Check Mongolian monthly weather.

Winter tour packing list

• Torch/headlamp will be useful when going to the bathroom in the evening while staying with nomads.

• A warm jacket suitable as low as -35°C. Layers of warm clothes are another option (fleece jacket/sweatshirt). The layers of clothing allow efficient heat retention and provide protection against the cold and chill wind. A three-quarter length, (and full length) jacket is advisable. For added warmth, we can provide full length, warm traditional cloth “deel” on request. It is free of charge.

• Pajamas/tights or something similar to stay warm at night

• Warm boots and a good pair of thermal wool socks

• Warm hats, gloves, and scarf

• Windproof sun cream may protect your skin from the sunlight reflected on snow.

• Some pills for common symptoms such as travel sickness pills, allergies pills, Pepto-Bismol for the inevitable upset stomach, Antibiotic cream for cuts, scratches, and insect bites, etc. These should be carried in the original, clearly labeled container, in your hand luggage, and should be checked with the Mongolian embassy if necessary.

• Shampoo, soap, lotions, deodorant, and toothpaste are all available extensively in Ulaanbaatar. However, they are not available during the nomad family stay.

• Bringing your towel, dry/wet tissues, and hand sanitizer will be handy. Particularly during some important stops in the countryside (call of nature).·

• Travel and medical insurance, passport, and other documents

• Camera with a spare battery or a mobile charger.

• Check the allowed power bank Wh with your flight operator and make sure you carry it in the handbag.

• Check here vaccinations and health information needed to travel to Mongolia.

• If you do not mind, bring small gifts for nomad children, but not mandatory. The gift ideas are some candies, biscuits, or school stationaries.
