1. Mongolian Entertainment

We bet you would love the performance. Specifically, the one at Tumen Ekh is among the top things to do in Ulaanbaatar – authentic and entertaining. They perform throat singing, contortion, drawling song, Tsam religious dance, short song, and colorful traditional dances. The performance always gets good compliments from the audience.

The performance lasts an hour, daily at 6 PM from 1 May through 1 October, and additionally performs at 4 PM during the high months.

The ticket office at the Tumen Ekh ensemble opens 30 minutes before the performance. Enter the performance hall as early as possible for a nicer seat as there is no seat number on the ticket.

2. Mongolian History Is The World History – Visit The National Museum of Mongolia in Ulaanbaatar

Located on the northwestern corner of Sukhbaatar square, the National Museum of Mongolia is among the top things to do in Ulaanbaatar.

The museum will be the first introduction to Mongolian culture, history, daily life, custom, and ethnic both for short and long period visitors. Their displays diversify from the Paleolithic Age man tracking through the next historical periods such as Mesolithic Age, Neolithic Age, The Bronze Age, ancient Mongol States, Great Mongol Empire, Soviet Mongolia, and democratic Mongolia. 3. Gandantegchilen Monastery

The largest active monastery and the center of Mongolian Buddhism, the Gandantegchilen Monastery was established in 1835, although communists destroyed some temples. Visit the monastery for attending the daily morning chanting (functions between 9 AM and 12 PM), observe religious locals, see ancient and modern temple architecture and 26.5 m tall gilded statue of Migjid Janraisag Buddha (Buddhist Bodhisattva) in one of the old temples.

4. Dinosaur Museums

There are two dinosaur museums in Ulaanbaatar. The Central Museum of Mongolian Dinosaurs locates downtown, while the other museum is in Hunnu Mall on the way to the airport. Both museums are quite impressive as all the fossils showcased are originals and complete skeletons of all shapes, sizes, and appetites. The museum visits do not require much time. Some of the species were found only in Mongolia. Some endemic species, complete skeletons, and rare findings make Mongolia the third important paleontological site in the world. 5. Sukhbaatar Square

The main squire in the downtown of Ulaanbaatar city was named after revolutionary hero Sukhbaatar Damdin – his statue towers in the middle of it.

The government house stands in the north of the square featuring large bronze statues of Genghis Khan, his descendants, and military generals.

There are usually various events or fairs held or locals visit at any celebration.  The square is a pleasant place to observe the people as it is a meeting place for Mongolians, particularly youths.

Some main buildings around the square are the City Hall, Stock Exchange, Cultural Palace, Drama Theater, museums, and the central post office.

6. Zaisan Hill

Zaisan Hill in the south of Ulaanbaatar is an observation area for the city’s panoramic view.

A large statue and paintings depict friendship scenes between people of the USSR and Mongolia marks the hilltop.

7. Narantuul Market

Word “cheap” reminds Narantuul open-door bazaar in Ulaanbaatar. Visit the Narantuul market not only for cheap. Visit to observe the locals and find locally made products or imported goods. They sell everything ranging from apparel to food, electronics, equipment, souvenirs, horse tacks, carpets, local leader products, religious items, traditional and modern furniture, decors, medicinal plants, handmade boot, and garments to the traditional dwelling ger parts.

Tips: You may bargain with the sellers, but not expect too much the same as it happens in other Asian countries.

8. Bogd Khan Palace

Mongolian last khan and religious leader Bogd Jabzandamba Hutagt’s winter palace is open for public functioning as a museum.

Its two-story wooden house displays items used by the queen and king, including some collections, dresses, a ger, and their rooms, etc while the temple buildings show wonderful religious masterpieces and artifacts of the 17th to 20th century.

9. Choijin Lama Temple Museum

Located in the heart of Ulaanbaatar (just 10 min walk from the Sukhbaatar squire) surrounded by modern skyscrapers, the red sect Chijin Lama temple is an architectural, sculptural, and fine art complex, was built between 1904 and 1908. The temple activities banned in 1938 during the socialist regime, later in 1942 switched to a religious museum. Its 5 temples feature statues of Sakyamuni (the historical Buddha), mummified remains of Choijin Lama, and Baltung Choimba inside statues. There are thangka paintings and tsam masks, stupas, wooden and bronze statues of various deities, some created by the famous Mongolian sculptor Zanabazar and his self-portrait.

10. Visit Ulaanbaatar Ger District

Assume you are not visiting Ulaanbaatar just for tourist events and places. Ask your guide and driver to drive up ger district mountains to see housing of the ger district area and photo opportunity.
